Intuitive Thoughts from Teresa

%$firstname$%,

Wow what a 2 weeks it has been! I don’t know about you, but for me the last 2 weeks has felt like 3 months of living! I know that many of you have felt like your lives are like a roller coaster with extremes of euphoria and challenges bereft of the middle ground.

I have not been immune. On April 28th, I arrived home from the APPPAH conference, fully rehydrated and energized from 4 days at the ocean and cross pollinating with a likeminded tribe. One week later to the day, here I was once again revisiting grief after our majestic dog Coltrane took his last breath, with his big head in our laps. We experienced this amazing ”natural” home doggy death fully supported in the middle of the night by our dear neighbors, Shara and Barry; and later joined by our vet Turie Norman.

ColtraneOnce again, I learned that grief is a muscle that calls for a work out whenever you least expect it. However you feel, you need to honor the repetitions it calls forth. There is no shortcutting grief.

Coltrane was 13 years, 10 months, and 13 days old—we knew he wasn’t going to be with us much longer, however, we were shocked by how quickly he made his move at the end. His death “labor” was a quick 5 hours.

His death gifted us with several healing gifts. The most striking one being when I asked for help it arrived – immediately and unconditionally. My task at hand was to remain open to receiving all of the love that followed.

Today, a week later, as I emerge to create this ezine, I am serenaded by the etheric sound of hummingbirds swirling all around me. So I share with you both the essence of the excitement and euphoria from my conference and the gifts from grief.

What I am learning is that the answer and the need we all share during these wild and crazy times is to really stand in and to cultivate our middle way.

So as we get pulled in both extremes, we resource back to the center, and nourish this sanctuary. In order to maintain this center place, we need to consciously make the choice to show up, engage and feel the connection. When we default to disconnection that is when it all seems to flow in a downward spiral of hopelessness and despair. When we choose to engage and connect, our energy can solidify and start to spiral outwards interconnecting with life.

Epigenetics was the key word and concept of the conference
Epi = above
Control of DNA form above and outside of gene
“Epigenetics: DNA Isn’t Everything.
Research into epigenetics has shown that environmental factors affect characteristics of organisms. These changes are sometimes passed on to the offspring.”

Bruce Lipton discusses epigenetics in his book The Biology of Belief.

This conference offered an ongoing lens to how epigentics impacts our fertility, prenatal course, birth and future health of the families we create and nurture.

1. Keynote Talk #II

Mardsen Wagner MD former head of WHO (World Health Organziation) Kicked off Saturday’s presentations by sounding the alarm about the rise in maternal deaths resulting from our rising
Csection rates. He has calculated that 60 maternal deaths a year in the US could be prevented if our CSection rates were to move back down from the current 31% to 15%. 15% is the recommended Csection rate by WHO.

He also beat the drum of questioning why are surgeons (that is what an OB/GYN) is responsible for normal births in this country, instead of midwives who are trained in normal births. He emphasized that use of midwives in other industrialized nations improves outcomes, lowered cost, and increased client satisfaction. He also discussed were the sociopolitical and economic reasons for why our Csection rate is higher than 15%.

To explore Csection rates in your area visit www.thebirthsurvey.com

2. I was totally energized from spending some time with these amazing young women Jeanette and Aurelie who are collecting data for the motherhood project. I wanted to share with you what they are up to.

3. Talk # 1AB

Dorothy Mandel’s talk on The Heart as Healer, The Neurobiology of Nurture
during Saturday’s research section was mesmerizing!
Her presentation embodied and spoke to the mind, body and spirit.

Did you know that the heart produces 3 hormones, including oxcytocin?

Also, that in addition to feeling pleasure when oxyctocin is released that its release creates more pleasure receptors?

So that when we experience pleasure, we create more pleasure receptors and thereby can experience more pleasure!

Physiologically, Pleasure creates more pleasure.

She also showed us stunning photos of stars that looked like hearts.

A significant portion of her presentation focused on how what we resonate from our hearts creates a physical field which can affect other fields. Check out and join this site she referenced that demonstrates this science and some action being taken.
http://www.glcoherence.org/

The Global Coherence Initiative is a science-based initiative uniting millions of people in heart-focused care and intention, to shift global consciousness from instability and discord to balance, cooperation and enduring peace.

This project has been launched by the Institute of HeartMath®, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), a recognized global leader in researching emotional physiology, heart-brain interactions and the physiology of optimal health and performance.

4. Keynote VIII

On Monday Robbie Davis Floyd outlined The International MotherBaby Childbirth: 10 Steps to Optimal Maternity Services

The purpose of the IMBCI 10 Steps is to improve care throughout the childbearing continuum in order to save lives, prevent illness and harm from the overuse of obstetric technologies, and promote health for mothers and babies around the world.

Honoring Your Child’s Spirit: Pre-birth Bonding and Communication

by Flo Aeveia Magdelena

Check out the contributing chapter written by Teresa!

Living Our Potential as Beings of Light

The family system is our first and most intimate experience of the world. It is where we learn about love, sharing, generosity, co-creation, and honoring—or about hate, reaction, fear, anger, and separation. The family may be a spiritual haven and a loving place of growth or a place of absent presence, where we physically live together but do not connect. We either make this connection and create a foundation in our childhood or spend our lives looking for it.

When parents establish a conscious heart/soul connection with their children and with each other, deeper levels of trust and safety are experienced. As we deepen our bonds, we are more sensitive to the subtle, nonverbal communication which we exchange at all times with all living organisms. Relationships are not bound by normal restrictions because the information sent via channels of sensory response are unaffected by language, beliefs, or convention. You are connected beyond earthly rules, and can therefore create a unique relationship that works for your family.

What's Coming Up

American Association of Birth Centers
Legislative Alert

Judge Rules Against Birth Centers

The federal administrative judge ruled against birth centers in the Texas Medicaid case. The federal government (CMS) is not required to pay the state their federal match for birth center facility fees.

So far CMS has disallowed payments to Alaska, South Carolina, Texas and Washington state for birth center facility charges. The Texas appeal would have directed CMS to continue paying the 42 Texas birth centers their facility fees – as it had for over 20 years.

The nationwide implications of this ruling for birth centers could be catastrophic. This decision applies to all states. Without payment of the birth center facility fees, birth centers in all states will be pushed to the brink of closure. We have already seen centers close in the state of Washington.

We have been proactive in finding a permanent solution for centers nationwide, and are actively lobbying for legislation that would mandate the birth center facility fee payment to the states in Medicaid. Representative Susan Davis (D) from California and Representative Gus Bilirakis (R) from Florida are set to introduce the bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1) Spread the word and gather signatures for the Consumer Letter

Many of you are already spreading the word via email and putting the letter in your waiting rooms – that’s great!

Download the letter to put in your waiting room or anyone else people gather.

Sign on the letter on the web.

Put a link to the letter on your website – Here’s the html code:
<a href=”Click’>http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=XGO2ZxaqKojCOGBg_2fBVxWg_3d_3d“>Click Here to sign the Consumer Letter</a>

2) Call your U.S. Representatives and Senators

The House Bill has both a Democrat and Republican lead sponsor. Now, we need the same in the Senate. Ask for their support of this legislation. Download to “Pregnant Women’s Access to Care Threatened” for some talking points. Our future depends on it!

3) Continue to collect signatures for the Physician Letter from our friends in the medical community.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to get our birth center legislation introduced and passed!

Sincerely,

Jill Alliman, CNM, MSN
Legislative Chair
